honestly

what's the difference between falling in love and loving someone?

i had a fifteen year old read the sweetest poem the other night at work. his goal is to read it to this girl in class by the end of the week. i'm trying to decide where he is on the love pendulum. where are all of us for that matter?

I tend to think of "being in love" as an irrational exxagerated emotional response to hormones and imagination. Romantic, huh? Loving someone, on the other had, is more active and purposeful. It is something done by choice and far more powerful. Not near as romantic, though. Yo point, Maren would often ask in our first year of marriage "Why do you love me?" And I would always reply, "Because I choose to." Let me warn you, I didn't score many points with that response, but I wanted her to know that whether she was skinny or fat, beautiful or ugly, cheerful or disspirited, that I would continue to love her.

Not to be preachy, but I sort took my cue from God, who has to do much the same thing. He loves us not because of anything we do or we are, but simply because He does.

That's interesting. I've been thinking a lot lately about the distance between being in love with someone and just loving someone. Huh...
